As part of EQUS’ commitment to knowledge, it’s important to keep our members informed on the latest rate changes that may affect your energy bill. The following article is designed to help you better understand new details about the Province’s Rate of Last Resort (formerly known as Regulated Rate Option) and EQUS’ Co-operative Energy Rate.
Rate of Last Resort (ROLR)
Starting January 1, 2025, Alberta’s Regulated Rate Option (RRO) was replaced with the Rate of Last Resort (ROLR) – a fixed energy rate set every two years.
A change put in place by the Government of Alberta, the ROLR will act as the new default electricity rate for Albertans who have not chosen, or not currently with, a competitive energy retailer.
Members who were previously on the RRO were automatically transitioned to EQUS’ ROLR as of January 1. You can change this at anytime by calling 310.EQUS, toll-free in Alberta.
Regulated rate members are free to purchase electricity services from a retailer of their choice. For a list of retailers, visit ucahelps.alberta.ca or call 310.4822 (toll-free in Alberta).
The new Rate of Last Resort (ROLR) is set every two years – this is designed to help avoid sudden spikes in pricing for members. Previously, the RRO was a market-adjusted rate that fluctuated monthly.
The new ROLR is set from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026. It can only increase or decrease by a maximum of 10% at the end of each two-year period.
Don’t worry! EQUS members previously on the RRO were automatically transitioned to the ROLR on January 1, 2025. No action is required.
Pursuant to the requirements of the Electric Utilities Act and the Rate of Last Resort Regulation, the ROLR has been approved by EQUS’ Board of Directors at a rate of 13.367 cents/kWh (in effect from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026).
Co-operative Energy Rate (CER)
Good news, members! As of January 1, 2025 EQUS’ Co-operative Energy Rate (CER) is lower than before. This new, lower rate will be automatically reflected on bills for members who have signed a CER contract with EQUS.
